Full-Journey Thinking
Economic mobility is a continuum. A current intervention should make sense in context of what came before and what comes next.
One Step Next Step is an economic-mobility company focused on helping people and institutions move from a single milestone to a connected pathway of continued progress.

Sonja Nelson is an executive leader, strategist, innovator, and cross-sector problem solver whose career spans corporate, housing, nonprofit, county-level and public-sector work, community development, and cross-sector collaboration.
Her work has consistently centered on how institutions can translate strategy, resources, relationships, and ideas into structures that improve people’s ability to move forward.
Across her career, Sonja has led organizational development, economic-mobility and resident initiatives, strategic partnerships, program and initiative design, social innovation, research-informed decision-making, and complex cross-sector efforts involving government, community organizations, philanthropy, businesses, and other institutional partners.
Her perspective combines executive and operating experience with a practical understanding of how policies, systems, products, and everyday decisions affect people differently depending on where they are in their economic journey.
She founded One Step Next Step to take that work further: building approaches that recognize economic mobility as a lifelong spectrum, help institutions see how their decisions affect that journey, and develop new strategies, tools, partnerships, and infrastructure that make continued progress more possible.
OSNS brings together economic-mobility strategy, applied research, measurement, program and initiative design, partnership development, and emerging product and technology development.
The company is founder-led at its current stage, but it is being built to extend beyond founder-delivered consulting through reusable methodologies, intellectual property, research, products, technology, and scalable partnerships.
Economic mobility is a continuum. A current intervention should make sense in context of what came before and what comes next.
Strategy should lead to decisions, structures, implementation, and measurable learning—not remain abstract.
Individual progress and institutional value are connected. Stronger mobility should create legitimate value across stakeholders.
New solutions should respond to real gaps, protect people, generate evidence, and become more useful through learning.
