Empowering Progress One Step at a Time

Economic mobility is a spectrum. We help institutions see the full journey.

One Step Next Step helps institutions align strategy, services, products, policies, capital, and partnerships so people can prepare for what comes next, sustain progress, and keep moving forward.

The full journey

Economic mobility does not happen in isolated moments.

People move through changing economic conditions over the course of their lives. The needs involved in surviving are different from those required to stabilize. Stability creates a foundation for advancement, but advancement also requires preparation for security, asset building, growth, longevity, and transfer.

Too often, support is concentrated around a particular program, eligibility threshold, transaction, or life event rather than the full journey. That can leave people without the resources, information, tools, or institutional support needed to prepare for what comes next—or to sustain the progress they have already made.

At the same time, organizations may be pursuing similar economic-mobility goals through separate programs, products, policies, funding streams, and measures without understanding how those efforts work together or what return is being created for all stakeholders.

The questions we ask

See the journey—and the institutional choices around it.

Full spectrum

Are people being supported across the full economic-mobility spectrum?

Alignment

Are services, policies, products, investments, and goals working together?

Next-stage readiness

Are people being prepared for the next stage—not simply helped through the current one?

Stakeholder return

What value and return are created for individuals, institutions, communities, and the broader economy when mobility improves?

Why One Step Next Step?

One step changes what becomes possible next.

Economic mobility rarely happens all at once. A person takes one step toward greater stability, security, opportunity, ownership, or long-term wellbeing—and that step changes what becomes possible next.

But progress is not only about reaching the next milestone. It is also about being prepared to succeed once you get there.

One Step Next Step reflects that approach: understand where you are, identify what matters now, prepare for what comes next, take the next step, and continue adapting as life changes.

That same logic applies to institutions. Organizations need to understand where their current programs, policies, products, investments, and strategies fit within the larger mobility journey—and what their next step should be to improve outcomes and create legitimate stakeholder value.

Mobility value

Progress creates value across the system.

Economic mobility should improve a person’s ability to live, plan, withstand disruption, pursue opportunity, build assets, and sustain progress. But the value does not stop with the individual.

When people are better positioned to advance, institutions may also experience stronger resident or customer outcomes, improved workforce stability, more effective use of programs and capital, reduced avoidable costs, improved product performance, greater organizational capacity, and new opportunities.

What changes for the individual—and what legitimate value is created for every stakeholder connected to that progress?
Founder perspective

Built from operating experience, not theory alone.

One Step Next Step was founded by Sonja Nelson, an executive leader, strategist, innovator, and cross-sector problem solver whose career spans corporate, housing, nonprofit, county-level and public-sector work, community development, and cross-sector collaboration.

Her experience informs an approach that connects strategy with implementation, institutional realities with lived experience, and individual progress with the systems and incentives surrounding it.

Current + future

Advisory now. Infrastructure over time.

OSNS currently works with organizations through research, strategy, design, measurement, and facilitation. In parallel, the company is developing reusable methodologies, research and measurement assets, products, and technology intended to support economic mobility at greater scale.

The longer-term vision includes an Economic Mobility GPS designed to connect individual navigation, institutional intelligence, and broader ecosystem learning. These capabilities are being developed and validated; they are not presented as completed commercial products today.
